The Union Middle School basketball team did something that hadn’t been done in 52 games on Thursday. They beat the Sampson Middle School Dark Horses.
In a game that needed overtime to decide, the Spartans came away with a 44-42 win. Hezekaih Pagan knocked down some big free throws down the stretch and Malcom Pigford scored what would turn out to be the game-winner for Union.
After Union led for the majority of the game, Sampson was able to take a narrow 1 point lead in the final quarter. Union then tied things back up, before snapping the long win streak with the 2 point win in overtime.
Union was led by Pagan with 14 points and Isaac Underwood with 13. Cole Bass, the Union big man also scored 13 for the Spartans.
Jamelle Williams led the game and Sampson in scoring with 17 points.
Union head coach Byron Bass was pleased with the way his team played.
“It is a streak that’s nothing short of impressive, what Ron has been able to do at Sampson,” said Bass. “We are glad we came out and played well, and were able to get the win. I am pleased with the way my team came out in this one.”
Sampson’s Ron Davis admitted that Union had a great team, and came out ready to play.
“They have a great team over there at Union, they really do. It was two good teams, and they made more plays than we did. We missed some free throws that hurt us, and they deserved to win. We knew (the streak) would end sometime, we just kept trying to put it off. This is going to be a very competitive season,” said Davis.
Sampson, 1-1 heads to Midway Middle next Wednesday. Union plays Midway on Monday.
