Clinton’s Lady Dark Horses opened the Four County Conference season on Tuesday night by hosting the Lady Patriots from Pender. Clinton used their trademark press to harass the Lady Patriots into numerous turnovers that resulted in easy buckets en route to a 60-13 rout.
Clinton roared out to a 29-4 first quarter lead, using a stifling press and the hot shooting of Alex Canady, 11 points in the quarter, to put the game away early. The Lady Patriots slowed the Lady Horses slightly in the second quarter as the teams went into the half with Clinton holding a 42-12 advantage.
Clinton did not let up on the defensive end in the second half, holding the Lady Pats scoreless from the field. Pender’s only point of the second half came on a third quarter free throw as the Lady Horses coasted to the 60-13 win and posted their first conference win of the season.
Alex Canady led the Lady Dark Horse onslaught with a triple double, scoring 17 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and 10 steals. Also posting double figures for Clinton were Brielle Mitchell with 15 points and Ashlyn Williams with 10.
After the game Clinton head coach Chris Owens commented on his team’s quick start, saying, “The girls came out playing well tonight. The press was working good early on and we got out to a big lead. That enabled us to work on our man to man defense and work on a new press we have put in. This was a good win for us, I will take 1-0 in the conference anytime.” Owens, continued by commenting on the Lady Horses’ next game, adding we go to East Bladen on Thursday night and that should be a real test for us and will go a long way to establishing first pace in the conference.
The win over Pender improves Clinton’s record to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in Four County Conference play. The Horses will travel to East Bladen on Thursday to face the Lady Eagles. At least one early season poll has Clinton ranked as the top team in 2A with East Bladen ranked at number two.
