Union’s Jawawn Newkirk connects on a shot during their loss to Trask on Tuesday

The championship game of the Nathan Gay Holiday Tournament was all Heidi Trask. Trask jumped out to an 8 point lead before Union managed to score and held on to and widened that lead as the game progressed. The final was 57-37, Trask.

Union was down 11-7 after a quarter. In the second quarter, The Titans pulled away with a 28-18 margin at the half. The Titans poured it on in the final 2 quarters with a 41-27 lead after 3, and the final 57-37. In the waning minutes of the game, the Titans showed their ball handling skills passing the ball around and not shooting. They could have scored a lot more points had they wished to. It showed coaching character and team discipline.

Union coach and tournament host Keagan Warren said, “I would like to congratulate Coach Orr and the Trask Titans on a great win, finishing out the tournament. We played about 7 guys tonight. We had some guys beat up and bruised up and not playing tonight. So overall, I think we did a pretty good job with our efforts tonight. We turned the ball over a little bit. It’s just tough. We have to limit turnovers. If we can do that, we can be in the games. But, overall the effort was there. We will take a little break and some time off and come back after the first of the year and regroup.”

Jawan Newkirk had 11 points in the Spartan effort. Donta Chavis had 9 to add to the Spartan box score.
