The Midway Lady Raiders hosted conference rival Clinton Monday night. The rivalry has been dominated by the Lady Dark Horses since the formation of the Four County Conference. Clinton continued its run with a 65-55 win over the Lady Raiders.
The Lady Dark Horses started slowly, but once they started hitting baskets, they were able to press. The press led to a 19-9 lead after 1 quarter.
The visitors posted a 39-25 lead at intermission.
Midway held its own in the 2nd half, but were not able to catch up. It was 53-40 following the 3rd period and Clinton finished with a 10 point win.
Alex Canady led the Lady Horses with 23 points. Brielle Mitchell added 19. Zoey Harris scored 7. Alania Capps had 6. Tanaziah Chestnutt contributed 4 points, while Kiera Mabry added 3.. Edye Carr scored 2 and Chelsea Underwood had 1.
For the Lady Raiders, Leah Williams tossed in 20 points. Taylor Faircloth connected for 12. J. J. Sankey had 8, while Hannah Lucas scored 6. Brianna Butler and Alyssa Wrench added 4 each. Maddie Royal hit 1 free throw.
“It’s a big win for us,” asserted Clinton head coach Chris Owens. ” Not taking anything away from them, I think we came out flat not playing the game we normally play. Once we settled down and got to playing, it was okay. We run 2 or 3 different types of presses, and that was very big for us. That’s the key to us getting some easy baskets.”
“We turned the ball over way too much to win,” assessed Midway head coach Brian Wallum. “We didn’t shoot the ball well, especially from the free throw line. I think we made 14 of 32 free throws. You can’t win a lot of games that way. I was impressed with the effort. They tried hard, but didn’t execute.”
The Lady Horses improve to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in the Four County Conference. They will travel to Union tonight. Midway falls to 6-6 and 1-2. Their next game will be tonight at Wallace-Rose Hill.
