The Union Spartans hosted the Clinton Dark Horses Wednesday night. The Dark Horses dominated the game, winning 70-25.

Clinton came out strong from the start of the game. In the first quarter they put up 25 points on the scoreboard. The Spartans team struggled to get in the game and once they did the intense Clinton defense slowed their advances towards the basket and the scoreboard showed with a score of 25-8.

The Dark Horses didn’t slow down the momentum any in the second quarter and continued to find the net for 18 more points. The Dark Horse defense became even more effective allowing the Spartans only 6 points by a score of 43-14.

After the half Clinton still kept the same pace going into the third quarter. Union was still kept from the net by the strong Clinton defense and could do little to catch back up to the Dark Horse team. At the end of the third quarter Clinton has a big lead, 60-18.

The fourth quarter saw the Dark Horses easing up a bit before coasting to victory.

The Union Spartans were lead by Devin Henry who contributed 7 points. Sam Crumpler added 6 points and Jawawn Newkirk and Shaquor Newkirk both had 4.

Jaquan Mclean led the Clinton Dark Horses with 9 points. Jaalen Best and Xzavier Howard both added 8 points to the score. Jeremiah Pope and Tymair McIntrye also both contributed 7 points to the overall score.

Union head coach, Keagan Warren knew Clinton was a great team but still thought his team could have performed at a higher level. “I want to congratulate Coach Jordan and the Dark Horses on a good win. They have a lot of athletes and have a great team. Our guys just came out turning the ball over and not giving a lot of effort and it was a little too late to pick it up at the end. Overall, we just have to continue to get better each day,” he said.

Dark Horse head coach, Randy Jordan, talked about the big win but also complimented the Spartan team. “Well, after coming off of an intense, emotional game with Midway Monday, we wondered how we were going to respond to that,” he said. “Union is a vastly improved team. Coach Warren is doing a great job with them and they are going to be something to reckon with down the road,” he said.

“I give our guys a lot of credit. They showed up, understood what their jobs were, and did their jobs from start to finish so I’m happy with the win. We got a little bit better again tonight and we got a lot of the guys a lot of playing time and that’s going to help us down the road,” Jordan concluded.

The Union Spartans will travel over the county lines this Friday to take on the Pender Patriots. Also on Friday, the Dark Horses will take the basketball action back home where they will host the West Bladen Knights.
