Raider senior Ayden Canady looks to score against West Bladen on Senior Night at Midway.

This year’s Midway Raider Varsity basketball included 8 seniors. Those young men were honored Tuesday night as they played in their last home game. The final outcome was in favor of the visitors from West Bladen, with Midway falling 58-46.

The list of seniors included Ayden Canady, Kendall Marley, Matthew Core, Dariuss Perez, Paris Smith, Shyheim Small, Marelle Bullock, and Jackson Carr.

The Knights got off to a good start and led 13-8 after 1 period. By intermission, the Raiders were holding their own, trailing 25-20.

In the 3rd quarter, Midway got as close as 34-31, but trailed 40-33 as the period ended. In the final frame, the Raiders closed to 42-40 with 3 pointer by Canady. However, West Bladen responded with 3 pointers on back to back possessions to go back up by 8 with just under 4 minutes to play. Midway could not get closer than 7 from that point. West Bladen posted a 58-46 final.

Perez led the Raiders with 11 points. Small added 9, while Canady scored 8. Smith connected on 7. Bullock added 5. Carr, Michael Kramer, and Austin Raynor contributed 2 each.

John Bowen led the Knights with 17 points.

“I thought in the first half we would not get off that 3 point line,” assessed Midway head coach Matthew Creech. “We didn’t shoot well tonight. We shot 4 for 28 from the 3 point line. I thought we competed. We took some unnecessary shots and then we took some that were pretty good.”

As for his seniors, Creech added, “the seniors mean a lot to this program. They were a part of the sophomore class that went 21-1 and won a conference championship. They came up here as juniors last year and really helped us have a successful year. More importantly than anything else, they are really good kids. They mean a lot to me personally and they mean a lot to this basketball program.”

The Raiders fall to 14-9 overall and 6-7 in the Four County Conference. The Knights improve to 17-6 and 8-5. The 2 teams appear headed for a 4th meeting next week in the 1st round of the conference tournament. Midway will play at Union Friday night, while West Bladen visits East Bladen.
