By almost the same margin they lost by to Hobbton Thursday night, the Lakewood Leopards got the best of the Hobbton Wildcats in the first round of the conference championships at Neuse Charter Tuesday night. The Leopards got a 71-59 win to advance to the next round Thursday night.

The Leopards jumped out to a 14-point margin the first quarter with a 24-10 score. The second quarter was even with both teams scoring 11 points; however, the Leopards took a 35-21 lead into the break. The 3rd quarter was all Lakewood again as they added 14 more points to the score. Hobbton picked up 11. In the final quarter, the Leopards scored 32 to Hobbton’s 17 for the win and the advance.

For the Leopards, Jirah Cooper led all scorers with 23 points. Kobe Jackson had 19 and Johnnie Owens added 12. Nyseim. Devane picked up 8.

Walter Thompson got 17 for the Wildcats. Hunter Britt added 15 and M. Boyer had 10.

Leopard coach Sylvester Pittman said, “It was a great win tonight. We came out with a lot in intensity. It was a good hard fought win. Coach Hooper’s crowd played hard but we had a little bit more for them tonight than we had the other (Thursday) night. We are going to enjoy the win and move on.”

Hat’s off to Coach Pittman’s team. We didn’t come out ready to play. We were flat the first half. Lakewood came out ready to play. My hat’s off to them. I told our guys that Lakewood wasn’t going to lay down and I think that’s what we thought. We shot terrible tonight. We may have shot 30%. We missed easy baskets and we didn’t play any defense. We made it too easy for Lakewood. They did a good job though. We just have to play better defense if we are going to do anything in the state playoffs.”
