The Union Spartans hosted the Hobbton Wildcats on Monday evening March 7th. The Wildcats were able to claim their fourth win after a close match with the Spartans, 4-2.

Hobbton pulled out early with 2 runs in the first inning. However, the Wildcats were unable to score again until the third. The Wildcats kept their lead by holding the Spartans scoreless.

In the third inning the Wildcats were able to add on two more runs, reaching their 4 runs of the night. Hobbton managed to hold off Union from scoring in the third and fourth innings also.

However, Union finally got one player around the diamond in the fifth inning, followed by another in the sixth. The Wildcats were unable to score any more runs that night after the Union defense stepped up keeping them from reaching home plate again. Even with this, the Spartans were unable to make a comeback to take the lead, ending the game 4-2.

Spartan head coach, Joshua Rackley sees a lot of improvements in his team and knows what needs to be done to become better. “Offensively we started hitting the ball and see the ball a lot better. Defensively, if we can cut on some routine plays we can win some ball games. Defense is starting to play a lot better, but we have to work on the routine defensive plays more to see a win.”

Hobbton head coach, Chris Carroll was proud of his team and the win tonight but also mentioned the Union team. “Our guys came out and played hard tonight. They worked really hard at practice and showed great effort tonight. I want to give a lot of credit to Union. They came out with severe toughness and they gave an amazing effort and I wish them the best of luck in the rest of the season.”

The Spartans will take the diamond again tomorrow at the home of the Lakewood Leopards. Hobbton will travel to South Johnston on Wednesday. Hobbton is now 4-0 on the young season, while the Spartans fall to 0-3.
