Raiders off to promising start

After last spring’s rain-shortened track season, the Midway Raiders are pleased to have 2 2016 meets under their belts before the end of March.

The season opened at Heide Trask on March 9 with the NC Runners Easter Tour. The meet featured 9 schools, including recent the 2A state champions from North Brunswick. The Raiders finished 4th in the men’s meet behind North Brunswick, Laney, and Richlands. The Lady Raiders came in 7th.

Raider highlights for the men included a 1st place in the high jump by Marelle Bullock with jump of 6’2” and a 2nd place in the 4×4 relay with a time of 3:38. The relay consists of J. D. Lockamy, Bullock, Luis Acosta, and Uvaldo Acosta.

Derrick Loftis, Raider state qualifier from Winter track, won the shot-put with a throw of 41.06. Early Baker took 2nd in the discus, throwing 119.09.

For the ladies, Taylor Faircloth captured the discus title. Her distance was 78.07.

On St. Patrick’s Day, the Raiders traveled to Pender High for a 4 team meet. Pender won the men’s meet by 6 points over the Raiders. East Bladen took 3rd and West Bladen finished 4th.

The Lady Raiders also finished 2nd to Pender.

The Raider men’s team took the top 3 spots in the 400 meter dash, led by Bullock with a 53.8. Lockamy had a 54.8 and Luis Acosta ran a 55.1.

Labi Olanipekun won the triple jump with a 36.11. Olanipekun edged out teammate Baker in the discus with a throw of 110.04. Dariuss Perez claimed the high jump with 6’2” leap.

The Raiders 4×8 relay team of Will Warren, Lockamy, and the Acosta brothers (Luis and Uvaldo) took 1st with a time of 8:44. The 4X4 team also got another win. Uvaldo Acosta also posted a win in the 800 with a 2:09.

In girls’ events, Lady Raider Faircloth again out-threw the competition in discus with a 79.10. Alea Belflowers was 2nd in 100 meter hurdles with a 19.3. Belflowers also took 2nd in 300 meter hurdles. Jessica Marcell ran 2nd in the 3200 meter run. The Lady Raiders won the 4×4 relay with a time of 5:09.

Following spring break, the Raider teams will return to action at Union High School on April 7. Midway will host the annual Civitan County Meet on April 18.
