Lakewood Area Volleyball Association’s LAVA 14 team, competed in their final tournament of the season, competing in the Carolina Regional Finals at Greensboro this past weekend.
Barber Park hosted the Lady Flames and 15 other teams from across the Eastern Region. LAVA’s point value seeded them as the top overall seed in the bracket play, and the team went on to go undefeated in pool play.
They then defeated the Apex Stars in the semi-finals to face another top-seeded team, in North Carolina Academy of Durham. The two squared off in the Championship set of matches.
In the first set, the LAVA team fell short in an intense game, 24-26. In the second set, the Academy jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, and finished the match 25-19. LAVA received the silver medal for Division 3 in the Eastern NC regional.
LAVA 14 head coach Jennifer Naylor praised her team for their play this weekend and throughout the entire year.
“I can’t say enough about these girls, their dedication and growth throughout the season. Their love for the game and their teammates show with every play,” said Naylor.
She went on to express her thanks to the parents and locals for their unwavering support throughout the season as well.
“I would like to thank the parents and the community for their support to LAVA this year,” she continued. “While we didn’t take the final gold medal, we had a successful season. We set 3 goals at the beginning of the season, and accomplished them all.”
Naylor and the rest of her LAVA team will continue to be involved in the sport, as she is also the head coach at Midway High School, and her entire team will play at the high school level. They all feel more prepared for high school competition through the LAVA experience.
