The Midway baseball team hosted the Union Spartans on Wednesday night for some conference baseball action. The Raiders continued its win streak, posting a 4-1 victory over the visitors.

Midway went on to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Raiders were able to move Wesley Johnson around for the run.

Midway added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Greg Nobles led the inning off, reaching first base after an errant throw. Adam Butler laid down a sac bunt to advance Nobles, who was then scored on an RBI double by Dustin Holland. Midway’s lead was 3-1 through five innings.

Midways final run came in the bottom of the sixth. Chandler Williford was walked to start the inning. Carson Calcutt was sent in to pinch run and advanced to third after an errant throw on a pickoff attempt at first. Matthew Nunnery sent a sharp line drive into right field, scoring Calcutt for the final run, 4-1.

Union went three-up-three-down in the top of sixth to end the game.

Landon Dorman earned the win for Midway, going five innings. He recorded three strikeouts and allowed one run on three hits.

Williford pitched two innings in relief, achieving three strikeouts and no runs on one hit.

Midway head coach Jason Fussell credited his teams hard work and teamwork to their recent success.

“The kids have bought in one hundred percent to the team aspect of the game, trying to get the bat to the next guy’s hands and move the base-runners,” Coach Fussell commented.

He also praised his team’s effort against the Spartans. “We were aggressive running the bases tonight and our pitchers did phenomenal.”

Midway’s next game is Monday at East Bladen. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

For Union, they remain win-less on the season, and are scheduled for a home game Tuesday against Wallace-Rose Hill.
