Midway fell in a big hole early to Pender High School during their softball game on Monday night. Despite a late rally, the Lady Raiders stranded the bases loaded in the final inning to fall to the Lady Patriots by a score of 6-3.
Leah Williams pitched a complete game for Midway, allowing 4 earned runs on 8 hits, while striking out 1 batter and walking 1 batter.
She also had a hit and a run scored at the plate for the Lady Raiders. Hailey West led Midway in hitting, as she had an RBI double. Hannah Jackson had an RBI single, Hannah Lucas had a single and scored a run, and Kaley Hawley and JJ Sankey each had singles. Emily Hairr scored a run for Midway.
Midway head coach Leigh Ann Smith admitted that mistakes early plagued them, and errors throughout kept them behind the eight ball.
“We are a young club and that can be expected sometimes,” she said. “We have to play a much better game though and cut down on the errors. We stranded the bases loaded in the last inning, so we still had our chances of winning despite all the bad. Cut out those errors and we are probably in good shape tonight.”
She went on to speak highly of Leah Williams, her pitcher on the evening.
“To kind of be thrown into the ‘ace’ role after Brittany Watson got injured, Leah Williams is doing all that we can ask her to do. She pitched a solid game, we just have to have better defense behind her,” said Smith.
Midway is set to try to regroup when they host Wallace on Tuesday. They are then slated to travel to Trask High School for another conference match-up on Friday evening.
Midway hopes to get pitcher Brittany Watson back by Senior Night, as she has missed the majority of the season due to an injury sustained in practice.
