The Rev. Roosevelt Johnson was selected June 5 at the 98th Hampton University Minister’s Conference and 78th annual Choir Director’s and Organist Guild in an audition of 25 musicians to perform by way of singing and playing the piano at the Whalum Recital held at the Hampton University Coliseum, Hampton, Va.

With an audience of about 10,000 people present, Johnson was selected by the music guild staff, Dr. Diane White Clayton and Linda Hall under direction of Dr. Raymond Wise. Auditions were held in the McGrew Conference Center.

Johnson serves as the pastor of Union Chapel AME Zion Church, Clinton. He also serves as minister of music for the early morning worship service at St. James AME Zion Church in Goldsboro in the Cape Fear Conference.

He is a 1978 graduate of Goldsboro High School and Wayne Community College with an AAS degree in human services. He is an employee with the city of Goldsboro and serves on the accident review board. Johnson has served as a contract musician and been awarded certificates of recognition from Seymour Johnson AFB Chapel, Goldsboro High School drama and chorus department, Wilson Technical College and a host of churches and ministries.

He is marred to Niagra Deans Johnson and they have two children, Azariah and Krystal Wilkins.

After performing at Hampton, he will be performing in Dallas, Texas.
