Board of Education member Glenn Tart stepped from behind the podium at the county auditorium earlier this week, wearing a million dollar smile, and approached his wife, Lisa, thanking her, on behalf of the school board, for a job well done.

Mrs. Tart was recently named as the Jean P. Powell Honored Edcuator Scholar for 2011-12, an accolade awarded by the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT).

She recently attended and participated in an NCCAT professional development seminar entitled “Catching Up with Your Students Navigating Technology for 21st Century Classrooms” on the campus of NCCAT Cullowhee. All of her expenses were paid.

“Mrs. Tart,” the board member said to a roar of laughter from administrators and board members at the meeting, “I congratulate you on this award and I hope you have a wonderful year.”

School public relations director Susan Warren said the prestigious honor served as a living memorial in perpetuity to Jean Powell, a long-time Clinton City educator, who was the 1983 North Carolina Teacher of the Year. Powell had the vision and determination to create NCCAT.

“We are very proud and fortunate to have Mrs. Lisa Tart selected for this honor,” she said. “In addition to getting all of her expenses paid during the four-day seminar, Mrs. Tart will receive $250 for use in her classroom.”

In a letter to Mrs. Tart, Dorcas Masson, development associate for the NCCAT, wrote: “We are honored to present you with this award and hope that you will take what you learn at NCCAT back to your classroom and your system. Thank you for all that you do to support the students at Hobbton Middle.”

For her part, Tart accepted the honor from her husband, did not make a speech, hugged him and left to applause from the administrators in the audience.
