Happy Labor Day!

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. One of the reasons for choosing to celebrate this on the first Monday in September was to add a holiday in the long gap between Independence Day and Thanksgiving. Labor Day is observed as a state and federal holiday.

I hope you have made plans with family and friends to enjoy some time together for good food, fun and fellowship. I wish everyone a very safe holiday weekend!

Legislation

HB-1066 Passing Title by Will

This bill, which was signed into law by the governor on June 26 will clarify, modify, and consolidate the laws regarding passing of title by will. When interests in real and personal property are being devised by a will, the probate process will be required for lien creditors or purchasers of value.

SB-749 Various Motor Vehicle Law Changes

This bill that was signed by the governor on June 26 contains a few significant changes to motor vehicle laws as it relates to the agricultural community. First, it expands commodities that can be hauled without registration from agricultural products such as cotton and peanuts to also include livestock, live poultry, animal waste, water, pesticides and seeds when in conjuncture with agriculture. Along with the first change, a header trailer, when transported to or from a dealer, or after a sale or repair, to the farm or another dealership does not need to have trailer registration. Third, this bill sets up an application process for a farmer to request the ability to drive over-width farm equipment on controlled access highways from the DOT. The final section of this bill deals with weight allowances in two different ways: It adds commodities such as meats, livestock and poultry to an exemption list for light traffic roads. As well as combining agriculture, livestock and forestry into the same weight tolerance class, while at the same time providing those industries several weight/axle options.
