With great excitement and anticipation, the doors to Harrells Christian Academy’s new Activities Center were officially opened last week for two home volleyball matches. Concessions were flowing, balls were bouncing and fans were cheering inside this facility measuring 19,250 square feet.
“It was definitely worth the wait,” exclaimed sophomore Ashley Usher, who delivered the very first official game serve in the new building. “I love playing in here and look forward to many more games and practices,” she continued.
The Activities Center has bleacher seating for 1,000 people. There is also a balcony area where fans can enjoy their concessions while watching all the action below. The facility is a beautiful, spacious area to hold official competition, but it also provides additional space for team practices. Approximately ninety percent of HCA’s middle and high school students participate in Crusader athletics. With three volleyball teams, six basketball teams, and only one gym, it made for a long day at school for students whose team had the late practice. Now, with the new addition, along with the old gym, three teams can practice simultaneously; the Activities Center affords space for two full court teams to practice at once. During the school day, the new building provides room for more physical education classes in all grade levels.
The athletic department is not the only sector that will benefit from the new facility. A full stage rests at one end, and special events such as Grandparents’ Day, Lower School Christmas program, academic banquets, graduation, Spring Fling, and many others will be held in the Activities Center. Furthermore, with HCA’s growing emphasis on the arts, plans are in the works to hold musical productions there in the near future.
As students of all ages passed through the new Activities Center on opening day, you could see the pride and enthusiasm on their faces as they soaked up the sights, sounds and smells of their very own new building.
