The Union girls varsity volleyball team traveled to East Bladen Monday night, and while the Spartans didn’t come home with a victory, their coach said she was far more pleased with their play than she has been in past games.

East Bladen won in four sets, 25-17; 25-21; 25-27; 25-20, but Spartan coach Dana Strickland said her girls never gave up.

“I was very pleased with what I was seeing from them,” Strickland stressed. “They played scrappy, they fought back and even when they’d get behind, they’d never quite. That’s what I like to see.”

Strickland said she firmly believed it was one of her team’s better games this season.

“I saw some things tonight that really pleased me, things that got me excited about what they can do. Most importantly, tonight they played like a team, and they did a really good job.”

The Spartans girls travel to powerhouse county rival Lakewood Tuesday. Game time 4:30 p.m., with the JV up first.
