The Hobbton Middle Wildcats soccer team opened the 2012-13 soccer season with an 8-1 victory over the visiting Midway Raiders.
“I was really pleased with the way we were able to move the ball around tonight,” said Hobbton head coach Damon Burnett. “Our defense came out and played very strong.”
Jair Sanchez led the charge for Hobbton by scoring four consecutive goals in the first half of the contest to give the Cats’ a 4-0 lead early in the game.
Edgar Lopez followed with two goals of his own to put Hobbton out front 6-0 and Larry Favela added a solo shot on goal to put the Wildcats up comfortably 7-0 going into the half.
The Raiders re-grouped after the break and scored a goal by Brandon Rodriguez just minutes into the second half, but Midway could not hold off Hobbton’s stingy defense.
Evaristo Herrera scored the final goal of the game on a solid shot late in the game to put Hobbton ahead for good 8-1.
With the win, Hobbton (1-0) will play at Sampson Middle on Tuesday; Midway (0-2) will play at home vs. Roseboro-Salemburg Middle. Game time is 4 p.m.
