After the many festivities and the crazy week that goes along with homecoming, the Spartans started off very sluggish as they played host to the Hobbton Wildcats. Nevertheless, Union rallied in the second half to win 25-7.

Neither team scored during the first quarter, but a 34-yard screen pass from Alfredo Garcia to Natrone Banks with 4:27 to go in the first half got the home team headed in the right direction. After a missed extra point, Union led 6-0 at halftime.

The Spartans started the second half with more intensity. Bakeem Murphey returned the opening kickoff of the second half all the way home for a touchdown. The successful 2-point conversion gave Union a 14-0 lead early in the third quarter.

Garcia added a field goal to the Spartan total with just over a minute to play in the third quarter, and Banks tackled the Wildcat ball carrier in the end zone for a safety early in the fourth quarter.

With 9:57 to go in the game, Garcia found Ryan Hall in the left corner of the end zone for another Union touchdown. After Campos made the PAT, the Spartans led 25-0.

The Wildcats would, howeve, ruin the Spartans’ shutout with 6:58 to play. Marque Surles scored on an 11-yard touchdown run.

For Hobbton, Rasheed Davis had 13 carries for 64 yards, Ziaquian Barksdale had 7 carries for 42 yards, and Surles had 1 carry for 11 yards on the touchdown run.

Union was led by Daniel Glover, who had 7 carries for 70 yards, and a touchdown. Garcia made a field goal and threw two touchdown passes. Ryan Hall had 4 receptions for 53 yards and a touchdown.

On the other side of the ball, Glover led the way with 10 tackles, Jarel Kerr had 8.5 tackles, Anfrenee Cromartie had 7 tackles, and Alfredo Garcia had 5.5 tackles.

“With it being homecoming, you expect them to start out sluggish, but I’m proud of the guys and how they stuck with it out there tonight” said coach Doug Burley. “We’ll have to protect the ball better at Wallace next week.”
