The Hobbton-Union soccer matchup was all that the coaches expected it to be, with the teams going toe-to-toe in a competitive battle that, in the end, the Wildcats managed to win 5-3.
“It was a really good game,” said Hobbton coach Bryan Martinez. “My guys didn’t play as good as they could have during the first half, but they regrouped and found their way in the second half. They did a good job overall.”
Union coach David Ameen thought his Spartans played well, too, particularly in the last 20 minutes of the game. “Honestly, we played some of our best soccer of the season in that last 20 minutes, but unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough this time.”
The first half was a defensive battle, with neither team able to score for the first several minutes of play.
Hobbton got on the scoreboard first, when Johnny Ramos, on an assist from Eber Gomez, hit the back of the net to put the ‘Cats up 1-0 just before the break.
Union tied it up at 1, when Isaias Campos hit pay dirt.
In the second half Gomez caught fire, getting the hat trick to put Hobbton up 4-1.
But Union wasn’t ready to quit either. Spartan Yoni Martinez found the net to move the score to 4-2, and Freddy Sanchez followed it up with a goal of his own.
The final score of the night came off the foot of Hobbton’s Abraham Alwahishi, assisted by Johnny Velardo.
Martinez said Hobbton, still ranked second in the Tri-County Conference behind powerhouse Wallace-Rose Hill, had a solid second half.
“There were times when we got a little lost out there, but they found their footing and got with it, and in the end did what they needed to do.”
Hobbton travels to Trask Monday for a 5 p.m. game. Union plays host to Wallace-Rose Hill in a 6 p.m. game Monday.
