HARRELLS — The celebration is coming! Harrells Annual Community Day is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. when the Main Street Parade kicks off the day’s festivities. The annual event will be this Saturday, Oct. 20, and is sponsored by the Harrells Volunteer Fire Department. All proceeds from the day will help the department with purchasing equipment and other items needed.

One of the Community Day Committee members, Kim Johnson, shared that this year they have over 75 parade entries scheduled, including the Dunn Clowns, Sudan Roadsters, Sampson County Honor Guard, church floats and area queens.

“We are truly looking for a great day of fun, getting together with friends and neighbors and enjoying the food as we celebrate our town and its community,” expressed Johnson.

Johnson was excited to announce that their famous wood-cooked BBQ will be sold, beginning at 11 a.m. and continuing throughout the day.

According to the committee, they have secured a large group of local craft vendors who will be on site selling a wide variety of wares. There will be Bluegrass and gospel music starting at 1 p.m., featuring David Tew and the Black River Pickers.

“We are hosting a Little Miss Harrells Contest for ages 3-8. Interested contestants should contact 910-249-2031 for more information,” said Johnson.

Other groups will be there offering food and entertainment. The Union High School FFA will have hot dogs and drinks for sale to benefit their FFA chapter and homemade ice cream will be on sale too. Amusements for the kids will also be available.

Johnson reported that the annual lawnmower pull will begin at 1 p.m. with registration starting at noon.

“There will be a huge Penny Social beginning at 4 p.m. with close to 150 donated items for folks to buy raffle tickets on. There is something for everyone at Harrells Community Day,” stressed Johnson.

The Harrells Community Day has a long history, and although it took a few years off, it has been back for several years now and is going stronger than ever, shared the members of the planning committee.

“This day allows the Harrells community, past and present, to come out and support the Harrells Volunteer Fire Department. It is a way for the community to give back to the fire department for the dedication and protection they continue to give us each and every day. Harrells is a small community but it has a fire department that surpasses many in this area. The department has worked very hard to purchase equipment, trucks, and continue training, all in an effort to help them keep our town safe. If the community can have a small part in helping them do this by raising funds, then Harrells Community Day is and will be a success,” asserted Johnson. “Harrells Community Day also gives everyone in the community a chance to come together to celebrate the fire department and each other as we have a lot of fun,” added the committee member.

Harrells fire chief George D. McGill said he was very appreciative for the support the community has given to support the fire department provide a needed service to the community and surrounding area.

“Harrells Community Day is just a great way to celebrate our community and we appreciate the support we receive from everyone. We are now able to have more updated equipment and provide more services to the community because of the support we have been shown. We do say thank you. We invite everyone to join us for Harrells Community Day. Come out and enjoy the best wood cooked BBQ you’ve ever had and enjoy fun for the whole family,” reported McGill.
