Union improved its conference soccer record to 6-5 Wednesday afternoon, defeating the visiting Trask Titans 5-1.
Coach David Ameen said he was pleased with the way his team played.
“They moved the ball well; my wings helped control the tempo…I thought it was a good showing,” stressed Ameen.
Union took control early, scoring 3 of its 5 goals in the first half.
The first came about 16 minutes in, when senior Mauricio Amaya found the back of the net.
Ten minutes later, it was freshman Michael Pineda who hit pay dirt off an assist by Yoni Martinez.
Then, right before the half, Chayanne Lopez got a free kick, putting Union up 3-0.
Trask found its footing in the second period, scoring a goal, but the Spartans were determined to keep up their momentum.
About 20 minutes into the second half, Cezar Cardinas got the goal, assisted by Martinez.
Cardinas hit pay dirt once more, this time in the final moments of the game and with an assist by sophomore Benjamin Serrano.
Ameen praised the play of Serrano, saying he stepped up big for the Spartans Wednesday.
“He had a lot of good moves for us tonight; he did a really nice job,” the coach stressed.
Union travels to Midway Monday for a cross-county match.
