An early morning attic fire Friday morning destroyed a double-wide mobile home, despite the efforts of the six fire departments that battled it.

Ark Matthews, chief of the Clement Fire Department, said Saturday that the blaze began around 8 a.m. Friday at the residence located at 659 Welcome School Road, that is just east of Rebel City but listed as an Autryville address.

“It was a total loss,” he explained. “The fire got up in the attic, however, it didn’t spread to the living room area.”

Matthews said that because of the quick response time and the combined effort of departments from Herring, Salemburg, Autryville, Bethany and Godwin-Falcon, they managed to salvage 75 percent of the furniture that was in the residence.

“There was a good group of people out there working together to get the fire put out,” he said. “There was smoke showing when we arrived, about 13 minutes after the first call, we tore off the roof and it was a total loss, but we did manage to save some of their furniture.”

Matthews said that there were no injuries reported in the incident and there will be no further investigation from department officials.

“From what we see it was purely accidental,” he said, without explaining the origin of the blaze. “There was nothing to indicate any foul play whatsoever.”
