The Midway Raiders cross country team traveled to Kernersville Saturday to compete in the state championship meet on a cool, but comfortable fall afternoon. All four classifications held their final competition of 2012 at Beeson Park. The Raiders, who finished 3rd last week at the regional, finished 9th in the state meet. 2012 turned out to be Midway’s best finish ever.
Bishop McGuinness, a private school in Winston-Salem, took the championship. Dylan Johnson of Hayesville finished first with a time of 15:59 in the 5k race.
Midway’s Michael McLamb posted a time of 17:25 and came in 23rd. Raider senior Caleb Sanders finished a second later in 24th place. Heath Smith was 63rd with running time of 18:36. Dalton Butler crossed the finish line 75th with a time of 18:50. Ritchell Cousar was the fifth Raider. He was 85th in a time of 19:11. Alex Bradley and Alex Boggs also competed for the Midway. There were 132 total runners.
“I am truly amazed at what I have been a part of in the past four years,” attested Caleb Sanders. “Going to the state championship the past 4 years has been great, but how I got through the past 2 has been awesome. Qualifying as a team has meant more to me than I could ever have imagined. I’m just glad I have been a part at making a tradition of success in Midway cross country and putting us on the map for North Carolina running.”
Sanders, Butler and Smith were the seniors on the team. Sanders and Butler will now turn their attention to winter track, which begins next week. Smith will be involved in basketball.
