Few details are being released yet on the death of an 80-year-old Clinton man, struck down by a Highway Patrol trooper Tuesday night as he was crossing N.C. 242. And Highway Patrol officials noted Wednesday afternoon that it could be several weeks before more details would be available.
Ottis Parker was killed in the accident. The trooper, Emory T. Brown, will be placed on administrative duty pending the completion of the collision investigation, Highway Patrol authorities said.
Being placed on administrative duty, noted First Sgt. Jeff Gordon, Highway Patrol public information officer, in a release is “customary in critical incidents of this degree.”
Trooper Brown, a nine-year veteran, is currently assigned to the Motor Carrier Enforcement Section, Troop B District 9 Fayetteville.
The accident happened around 7 p.m. Tuesday as Brown was traveling north on N.C. 242, about 0.1 miles north of Autryville Road in Salemburg. He was driving his Patrol vehicle at the time of the incident.
“The investigation is ongoing and information being provided is preliminary in nature,” Gordon noted in the release.
Contacted by telephone Wednesday, Gordon said no further details would be released at this time, pending a detailed investigation that, he noted, could take a couple weeks to complete.
“There will be a lengthy examination of the evidence,” he stressed.
