Does your little boy slouch at the dinner table? Does your daughter carry a heavy backpack over one shoulder? Do your children spend hours on end hunched over a computer keyboard surging the ‘Net?

“For years, parents have told their children to ‘stand up straight’ without really knowing why it is important,” said Dr. Tim Kosterman, a local doctor of chiropractic here in Clinton. “While standing up straight seems like an obvious way to correct poor posture, there are so many other activities that make up a child’s daily routine that can have an impact on their spinal health. Your doctor of chiropractic can give you tips to help encourage correct posture around the clock.”

For the past 20 years, Dr. Tim Kosterman has been sharing the importance of proper spinal hygiene with students in third grades in the Clinton City and Sampson County school systems. Using a model of the human spine, Dr. Kosterman demonstrates how improper body mechanics can harm the spine. He also emphasized proper lifting techniques, sleeping and sitting positions. A major focus of his talk is centered on how the impacts of heavy book bags distort the spine. He stresses the need for students to carry book bags with both straps on their shoulders to prevent spinal problems in the future.

Dr. Kosterman sponsored a poster contest. First, second, and third place prizes were awarded to students whose poster best illustrates proper spinal hygiene. While kids understand the importance of taking care of their teeth and eyes, now they are realizing the importance of taking care of their spines.
