Midway’s varsity girls basketball team hosted North Johnston Thursday evening in a rematch of a game that the Lady Raiders lost two weeks ago. The Raiders fought hard and played a closer ball game in this one, but still fell short 46-39.

The Raider girls started out down 8-0, but used a 9-0 run of their own to take a 1-point lead early in the game. North Johnston made a layup as the horn sounded ending the first quarter, giving them a 10-9 lead. The Lady Raiders outscored the Lady Panthers by one in the second quarter to tie the game at 21 entering halftime.

The game stayed tight in the third quarter as each team allowed 9 points, resulting in a 30-30 tie going into the final period. North Johnston simply made their free throws count, and performed well down the stretch.

Untimely turnovers plagued the Lady Raiders, and they fell short 46-39.

Jennifer Blackmon had another double-double for the Lady Raiders with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Jada Cannady added 12 points. Elizabeth McCullen did a good job distributing the ball as she had 5 assists to go along with her 2 points.

Coach Jennifer Honeycutt said she was proud of the way her girls played overall. “They’re a really good team and we just had a hard time doing the little things late. Now we just have to practice hard and get ready to play Lakewood,” she stressed.
