It took two overtimes for the Midway varsity boys to dispose of the visiting Hobbton Wildcats Tuesday night. The final score was 58-51.
Midway led 9-8 after one quarter, but trailed 21-15 at intermission. Hobbton went up 24-15, before a furious Raider comeback which included a 10-0 run. By the end of the third period, the Raiders led 36-32.
In the fourth quarter, the visitors tied the score at 38 with 4:46 remaining. Andre Sankey then hit a shot for the Raiders making it 40-38. Following free throws by Hobbton’s Justin Armwood and Midway’s Josh Minnick, the score was 41-39. Jonathon Faison then tied it at 41.
Arell Owens scored for the Wildcats and Raheem Thomas hit 2 free throws for the Raiders with 53 seconds left to knot the score at 43. A blocked shot by Quincy Baggett gave Midway the ball with 36 seconds left, but they couldn’t break the tie. It was 43-43 at the end of regulation.
In the first overtime, Faison and Armwood scored to put Hobbton up by 3. Baggett, Heath Smith, and Justin Thompson scored Midway’s points. The Wildcats took possession with 1:55 left and burned 1:20 before turning the ball over. The Raiders were not able to get off a shot on their final possession. After over overtime, the score was 48-48.
Rashad Davis gave Hobbton the lead to open the second overtime. Justin Thompson responded with a basket and foul shot to give Midway a 1 point lead. With 2:06 left, following a Hobbton miss at the free throw line, Thompson scored again. The Raiders led 53-50.
Thomas added a point for the home team, but Donald Farrior hit one on the Hobbton end of the court. Finally, with a minute left, Michael Hall sank 2 free throws to put Midway up by 5. Thompson hit 2 more with 40 seconds left to post the final score of 58-51.
Justin Thompson led a balanced Raider attack with 10 points. Baggett dropped in 9. Raheem Thomas, Taylor Calcutt and Andre Sankey scored 7 each. Michael Hall added 6. Heath Smith connected on 5. Josh Minnick and Tyler Pope contributed 3 a piece.
For the Wildcats, Armwood scored 13. Davis added 10. Faison contributed 9. Owens connected on 8 points. Charles Chestnutt dropped in 5. Farrior had 4 points. Jodec Terry scored 2.
“Right now it seems we’re sort of in a slump, and basically playing off fumes,” remarked Midway coach Leonard Henry. “Tonight’s game was really nothing about Hobbton. We have respect for those guys, of course, but it’s about getting our rhythm back. Tonight showed that our guys want to fight through these things and get ready for the second round of this conference. Overall, I’m satisfied with the win.”
The Raiders improve to 9-7 overall and 4-3 in the Tri-County Conference. Midway will host Trask on Friday while Hobbton entertains Pender.
