It was ladies night at Lakewood on Thursday as both girls teams walked away with wins against visiting Wallace-Rose Hill. Both Leopard boys teams put up a good fight, but couldn’t get the ball to fall in the basket.
Varsity Girls
The varsity Lady Leopards jumped out to an early lead, and by halftime they were ahead by 27 points, 40-13. The Bulldogs were shut down in the third quarter and only made 3 points to the Leopards 19.
The final score showed a 50-point difference, 73-23.
Lakewood head coach Lofton Kerr was thrilled to see Kiara Rich, a first year starter, get a hot hand. “This was Kiara’s best game ever. I’m just glad everyone on the team got to play tonight. I see we need more patience on offense. Now we get to take Friday off so we can get ready for Trask next week,” he said.
Leading all scorers was Leopard Kiara Rich with 20 points. She was followed by Teisha Rich, with 16; Brittney Boykin, 13; Bianca Moore, and Rashyda Parker, each with 7 points.
Junior Varsity Girls
The junior varsity girls managed to get a big lead in the first quarter, 18-8, and then showed off their defense by holding the Lady ‘Dogs to just 2 points to their 11 in the second quarter. The halftime score was 29-10
The last half of the game was much of the same, with Wallace only scoring 5 more points to Lakewood’s 14, for a final score of 43-15.
Leading all scorers was Justina Henry with 14 points. Tasha Stevens had 12 and Jasmine Williams, 7 points.
Coach Kerr was pleased at the strength of his defense. “Our defense was really good tonight, but the offense needs some improvement. I’m glad everyone got to play, and now we’ve got to get ready for Trask next week,” he said.
Varsity Boys
The varsity boys game was a nail-biter up until the fourth quarter, when No. 1 Wallace took the lead for the first time and managed to hold on to it as time ran out. The Leopards lost 56-44.
They started out even and by the end of the first eight minutes were tied at 8. The second quarter was just as tense, with the back and forth battle; the teams went into the locker room with Lakewood up by 1 point, 25-24.
The Leopards managed to hold on to that 1-point lead, 36-35, going into the fourth quarter, but not for long.
An elated Bulldog coach, Robinson, was relieved to come away with the win. “This is our third game in four days, so we were a little sluggish, but they were able to turn it on when they needed to. Lakewood played really good and hard. Anytime you get a conference win, it’s good,” Coach Robinson stated.
Lakewood head coach Sylvester Pittman was disappointed in the loss, but saw some good, hard play by his team. “I think fatigue had a lot to do with us getting behind. We seemed to lose focus. The boys put forth a good effort against the No. 1 team (Wallace) in the conference and I’m proud of these kids. We had them on the ropes, but just couldn’t finish,” he explained.
Leading all scorers was Bulldog Marquel Newkirk with 18 points. Jamel Jones was one point away with 17 for the game.
Ryan Emfinger was top scorer for Lakewood with 16 points. He was followed by Mike Smith with 12; and Patrick Rich with 6 points.
JV Boys
Lakewood’s junior varsity boys got a slow start in the first quarter and never recovered.
The ‘Dogs were chomping at the bit from the tip off and scored 31 to the Leopards’ 5 points in the first eight minutes. By intermission, Wallace was up 31 points 45-14.
Lakewood came out in the third quarter with a bit more intensity, but was never able to overcome the first half deficit. The final score was 67-48.
In analyzing the final score, Leopard head coach Pittman said, “They got a sluggish start and were never able to get it going,”
Leading all scorers was Wallace’s Alex Lisane with 17 points. He was followed by Walker Imwall with 12 points.
For the Leopards, Maurice Boone was top scorer with 14 points; Willie Herring, 10; and Michael Graham with 7 points.
Lakewood will be playing at home again next Tuesday against Trask. Games begin at 4 p.m.
