The Hobbton High girls’ basketball team will participate in a “Play for Kay” game for the Kay Yow breast cancer fund in Friday night’s game with Union. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund is a charitable organization committed to finding an answer in the fight against women’s cancer through raising money for scientific research, assisting the under-served and unifying people for a common cause.
Janet Hobbs, whose daughter Casey is a senior basketball player at Hobbton, got the ball rolling for the fund raiser at the game. Coach Alphonso Hooper, himself a 14-year leukemia survivor, was all for it and said he hopes to make it an annual event.
Hobbs has bought the girls pink shirts and they will be playing with a pink basketball. She has been very active in Relay for Life over the years and sees this as something else that can help.
The girls are working on a banner to be displayed in the gym with cancer survivors names on it. As part of the fund raiser, names are $5 each.
Hooper said, “This not just for breast cancer survivors. It is for anyone who has had cancer. We have a couple of women, one a student, diagnosed with cervical cancer here in the school now.”
Midway and Lakewood will also be playing a Play for Kay game Friday night.
Hooper, as well as other coaches, encourage attendance at the games. “Come out and join the fun and help us raise money for a very good cause,” Hooper said.
