Thomas J. Tanner, 59

AUTRYVILLE — Mr. Thomas “Tommy” Jones Tanner, 59, of 242 Holland Road, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2013 at The Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Newnan, Ga.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Butler Funeral Home in Roseboro with Dr. James E. Dees Jr. and the Rev. Wayne Thomas officiating.

Mr. Tanner was born on Feb. 12, 1953 in Sampson County to the late James and Lillian Crowson Tanner. He is preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Johnny Roger Tanner.

He was a graduate of Roseboro-Salemburg High School. He served as a volunteer at Salemburg Fire Department. From 1976 until 2004, he worked in security and maintenance at the N.C. Justice Academy in Salemburg.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Christianson Tanner of the home; one son, Christopher Mooney and wife, Jennifer of Autryville; his step-son, Shaun Mooney of Autryville; two grandsons, Austin Mooney and Noah Mooney; four brothers, Jimmy Tanner, Ricky Tanner and Billy Tanner, all of Salemburg, and Jerry Tanner of Glenville, N.C.; and four sisters, Shirley Childress of Clinton, Ann McLeod and Peggy Tanner, both of Sanford, and Elaine Larson of Salemburg.

The family will receive friends on Saturday afternoon following the service and other times at the home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tommy J. Tanner Memorial Fund, c/o State Employees’ Credit Union, P.O. Box 1086, Clinton, N.C. 28329.
