A pedestrian was struck and killed in the wee hours of Thursday morning along Garland Highway near Ebenezer Forest Road, but N.C. Highway Patrol troopers still don’t know the identity of the individual.

The incident happened around 12:20 a.m., just as torrential rains and heavy winds blew into Sampson County. The driver of the vehicle, Alphonzia Lee Jr. of Council was traveling south on U.S. 701 (Garland Highway) and the pedestrian was apparently walking south in the travel lane.

Lee’s 1990 Honda struck the pedestrian, who did not survive the incident.

Patrol Sgt. Bryan Smith said officers had very little information to go on and were continuing to search for something that would help them identify the victim.

“We are still trying to piece together what happened,” Smith said. “Right now, we don’t have very much that we can release.”

An investigation is continuing.

This is the first fatality on Sampson County highways in 2013.

What kind of person is bee bopping down a dark road pass 12 am in the morning during a rain storm? Natural selection must be working over time.
