Clinton’s varsity Dark Horses got a Senior Night victory over South Lenior Friday, giving the visitors a sound 78-61 thumping. The Horses are now tied for first in the 2A rankings are are co-conference champions.

Dominating on the court, the Horses ended pounded away at the first quarter with a score of 20-6, Clinton in the lead.

But South Lenoir didn’t just quit either, and during the second quarter they found a way to score over the powerful Horses to keep themselves in the game. At the half, they were trailing by only 4, 32-28.

But Clinton coach Randy Jordan tossed out some new plays at the opening of the second half and Clinton pushed ahead, holding the visitors at bay. By the end of the third quarter, they had increased their margin to 56-42.

While battling on the court, South Lenoir attempted many different plays to get around Clinton’s strong defense. The Horses did not allow this. After many plays and many points, the Horses ended the night with a final score of 78-61.

“I’m so proud of my team, they are a great group. I was impressed during the first half of the game, the tempo was up and we were man to man. During the second half, we controlled the tempo and spread the floor on offense, lay up after lay up” Jordan said.

Leading scorers for Clinton were Ryan Chester with 21 points, Greg Smith with 13 points, Demontio Bryant with 11 points, and Shian Bradshaw with 10 points.

Clinton will play Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Richlands against Swansboro in the opening round of the 2A playoffs.
