Sampson Middle’s girls ended their season the way they began it — with a commanding victory, this one over Union Middle. Final score was 57-20.

The win, the second last week, after Sampson also defeated Roseboro-Salemburg Middle 27-6 on Monday night, moves the young Lady Dark Horse record to 12-0.

“It was, without a doubt, a great season,” said coach Jamie Harper. “The girls have been a joy to coach. They have grown all year, and they have really played as a team. That’s something a coach really likes to see.”

Harper said the Clinton girls played unselfish basketball all season, sharing the ball and moving it around, opening opportunities for teammates to score.

That’s what they did Monday against R-S and again Thursday against Union.

“I’ve seem so much improvement in these girls throughout the season. Some of them were playing their first year of organized basketball, and by the end, I could really tell a big difference in them. They grew and improved with every game.”

The team, the first year coach said, also showed great sportsmanship throughout the year, something she, too, that made her proud of her girls.

“Every game was very much a team effort, and every game they were playing with heart and determination, but they were good sports, too.”

Harper will lose nine eighth-graders from her 13-member team this year, but while the face of the team will change, she feels good about next season.

“I have one starter, Edye Carr, returning. And she’ll be a good leader for our team,” Harper said. “And we have some others coming up that will add to our team, too.”

In Thursday’s final game, Mikayla Boykin had 46 points in her last middle school game. Also scoring for Sampson were Carr with 7 points; Regan Barefoot, 2; and Mariah Boone, 2.

In Monday’s game against Roseboro, Boykin had 17 points; Kiara Mabry, 7; Barefoot, 2; and Jessica Howerton, 1.
