Clinton police are still searching for clues that will lead them to the suspect responsible for shooting into three Royal Lane Apartment residences early Friday morning, injuring one woman as she slept.

Police Chief Jay Tilley said Monday that investigators now believe the woman nor the three apartments were the actual targets of the shooter.

“We believe this all started from a possible altercation in the parking lot of the apartments. That’s what led to the shots being fire,” Tilley stressed. “We don’t think the woman was the intended target. In fact, we really don’t believe any of the apartments where shots were fired into were the targets either.”

The incident happened around 5:22 a.m. Friday when officers responded to a report of a shooting at the Royal Lane Apartments.

When officers arrived on scene they found a 29-year-old woman who’d been struck in the leg by a single gunshot that entered the front of her residence. She was transported to Sampson Regional Medical Center where she was treated for her injuries and later released.

After further investigation, officers determined that there were actually three apartments that had been fired into around the same time; however there were not other reports of injury.

“We are currently looking a suspect in this case,” Tilley said. “We don’t have a great deal to go on at this point, but we do believe the same person is responsible for firing into all three apartments.

The case remains under investigation and officers are asking anyone with information on the incident to call them at the Police Department, 910-592-3105 or the tip line at 910-590-3001.
