Hobbton’s varsity Wildcats found their footing Thursday in the second game of their young baseball season, crushing visiting Goldsboro 12-2 in six innings.

New coach Mike Joyner said the team still had much to work on, but he liked what he saw from his team on Thursday night.

“We are getting there,” Joyner said. “Sure, we still have a ways to go, but we looked better out there today (Thursday) than we did against Princeton Wednesday. We had a bad game against them, even though once we settled down and finished that game better than we started.” Hobbton lost the Princeton game 9-2.

Thursday, his team turned things around. “I felt good about how we played tonight and I feel good about where we are right now.”

Joyner said his team was actually getting some hits and getting runners on base and in line to score points.

“We just need some more practice. The weather has really been horrible and we haven’t gotten a lot of time on the field yet.”

But despite the lack of practice, Hobbton took it right to Goldsboro Thursday, wrapping it up in six.

Freshman pitcher Hunter Britt started on the mound for Hobbton, throwing 12 strikes in 5 innings. Another freshman, Brandon Rogers finished the game, getting 2 strikeouts in 1 inning.

Leading batters for the ‘Cats were C.J. Gautier who went 2-3 with 1 double and an RBI; and Johnny Knowles with a double.

Hobbton moves to 1-1. They face North Duplin on the road Friday.
