On a cold day in Spartan Country, the Lady Spartans played host to East Bladen’s softball team. Due to strong winds and cold temperatures, the game was moved up to an earlier time, and the baseball game between the two would be suspended after just two innings.

It may have seemed cold at Union, but the Lady Spartans’s bats were hot as they defeated East Bladen 10-0 in 6 innings due to the 10-run rule.

Union scored 5 runs in the second inning, 3 in the fourth, an 2 in the sixth that would go on to end the game.

It was obvious that the Lady Spartans were ready to play, as they continued to find gaps in the outfield to score runs. Their base running was sharp, and defense was poised to make any play that was hit to their respective positions. Megon Smith’s performance on the mound was very sharp, and East Bladen had a hard time getting the bat on the ball at all.

The winning pitcher was Smith who had an outstanding game. She pitched all 6innings, throwing a shutout, while allowing only 2 hits. Smith also had an amazing 12 strikeouts in the game.

She helped her cause on the mound by contributing offensively, as she went 3-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and 3 runs batted in. Taylor Malpass went 1-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Lauren Preddy was 1-4 with an inside the park home-run, two runs scored, and 3 RBI’s. Claire Riley went 2-2 with a double and scored a run. Jeanna Lee Strickland was 2-3 with two runs scored, a walk, and a triple into right centerfield in the fourth inning that would clear the bases and give the Spartans a bigger lead. Brianna Allen went 1-3 with 2 RBI’s and a run scored, and was also walked. Jeanna Dutton was 1-2 with a run scored to round out the stats for the Lady Spartans.

“I’m very proud of the way we played today,” said Union head coach Doug Burley.

“We hit the ball well and Megon pitched a great game. It’s not easy to hit the ball like that in cold weather, so I was pleased with our focus and our performance today. Now we have to turn it up a notch as we begin conference play tomorrow.

Union took their 1-1 record on the road to James Kenan Thursday night where they began conference play. Those scores were not available by press time.
