Union and Clinton battled it out on the baseball diamond Wednesday, and 7 innings wasn’t enough to decide the outcome. The game went the length of a Major League game, with Union winning in the bottom of the 9th, 5-4.
Clinton scored 2 runs in the 2nd, and 2 runs in the 3rd. Union scored 1 run in the 1st, 1 in the 3rd, 1 in the 5th, 1 in the 7th, and finally the game-winning run in the 9th inning.
Corey Smith started on the mound for Union, and pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing 4 runs. Then Tyler Mathis was inserted into the game at the pitching position. Mathis was lights out on the mound, as he pitched the remaining 5 2/3 innings, allowing 0 runs, and striking out 5 batters.
Ryan Hall led the offensive attack for Union, going 3-4 with an RBI. Cody Preddy was 1-1; Alfredo Garcia was 2-5; Tyler Mathis, 2-3; Corey Smith, Bryson Worely, and Dustin Alphin, all 1-4.
Clinton led 4-3 with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th. Justin Kornegay converted with a single that would tie the game and send it to extra innings. After a scoreless 8th, and scoreless top of the 9th, the bases were loaded for Union, as Dustin Alphin came up to bat, with 1 out. Alphin put the bat on the ball and hit a grounder to the Clinton shortstop. The shortstop fielded the ball cleanly, but then threw the ball over the head of the Dark Horse catcher. Justin Kornegay came in to score, and win the game for the home team. The final play was scored an error.
“It’s a good night, we won” said Union’ head coach Josh Rackley. “Tyler Mathis did a great job coming in and pitching for us, and Dustin Alphin put the bat on the ball when we needed him to, and luckily we got out of there with a win. I’m very proud of my team, and we’ll need to be ready for our game Friday evening.”
Union improves to 2-1 on the season and will host Hobbton Friday at 6 p.m.
