Midway’s girls came from behind Wednesday night to get their first conference win of the season, defeating Wallace-Rose Hill 5-4.

The Lady Bulldogs had the 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the 7th, but Midway wasn’t giving up on their home turf easily.

Elizabeth McCullen reached on an error, and Jada Cannady got the tying run on a go-ahead. Kaitlyn Jackson and Kelsey Pondo got base hits, followed by Amber Poole, whose base hit also brought in the winning run to give Midway the 5-4 win.

McCullen was on the hill all 7 inning, allowing 5 hits and coming up with 3 strikeouts.

“She did a good job for us,” Midway coach Leann Smith said

The coach gave a lot of credit to her outfield, sophomores Poole and Savannah Bullins. “They’re really getting into the infield well and getting it to home plate. I have to give kudos to them.”

Smith said the Raider girls were hitting the ball pretty well, better than they did in their game against Rosewood.

“Really we are doing better early in the season than I’ve ever seen,” Smith attested.

But the coach said she had a lot of young players who were working through the learning curve.

Midway has no juniors on its team this year. “We are a very young team, but we’re growing. There are still a lot of simple rules that we’ve got to learn. We are hurting right now on defense more than anything, but once we get by the learning curve, I think we’ll be OK.

“It’s really my seniors that are going to have to step up and be the leaders for this team, teaching these young players how to be champions,” Smith said.

In Wednesday’s game, leading hitters were Cannady, who went 4-4 with 3 runs, and Pondo, who had 2 hits, one of them coming in the bottom of the 7th.

The win moves Midway’s girls to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
