A homeless man, wanted on failure to appear charges, including several probation violations, fled from officers when they spotted him near Royal Lane Apartments earlier this week. He was apprehended a short time later and taken to the Detention Center where he remains awaiting trial.

According to Sampson sheriff’s Cpl. Marcus Smith, Rolando Alexander Torres, 20, was placed under a $21, 000 bond after officers caught up with him, took him into custody and brought him before a magistrate. His first appearance in court is set for March 20.

Special Investigation Division agents were in the area of Royal Lane Tuesday when they spotted Torres. Realizing there were warrants against the 20-year-old, officers attempted to stop him to serve the papers, but Torres was having no part of being taken into custody.

Instead, report show, the suspect took off into a wooded area near the apartments and tried to hide in the underbrush. Officers brought in K-9 officer Bink who tracked the suspect, leading officers to him.

Torres was taken into custody at that point and charged with three felony counts of probation violation, an FTA for breaking and entering into a motor vehicle, resisting a public officer and injury to personal property.
