The first week of March has been a very productive one at the Raleigh office. We are working hard to pass beneficial legislation and make this a great two years at the General Assembly in moving North Carolina forward.

Notable Legislation

After receiving positive feedback from the email last week, I wanted to continue to provide the two categories in this section. If you want to learn more about these bills you can click on the bill number or visit the General Assembly website to look at all the bills we are working on right now; we have filed a lot of bills.

Passed

SB 122 -

An act to add the offense of human trafficking to the list of criminal convictions that require registration under the sex offender and public protection registration program.

-This bill passed the Senate this week and is now in a House committee for consideration

HB 23 -

An act directing the state board of education to develop and implement digital teaching and learning standards for teachers and school administrators.

-This bill originated in the House, however since changes were made in the Senate committee it will go back to House for confirmation if approved by the Senate this week.

SB 10 -

An act establishing the government reduction and efficiency act of 2013

- This bill is currently in conference committee, House and Senate members are working out differences to reach a final version of bill. Once the conference committee is complete, both chambers will vote on the final version.

Filed

SB 218 - No Tolls on I-95

SB 163 - Protect Landowners’ Water Rights

Photo ID Bill:

One of the pieces of legislation that people have been asking me about is the photo id bill, the one requiring someone to show a photo id card before voting. This bill will begin in the House and we have been told that they are currently working with various groups and individuals to make sure that the best possible bill is introduced. The idea is one that has the support of a majority of all North Carolinians from both sides of the aisle and I’ve heard support from many of you so I’m eager to work with my colleagues in passing this important legislation.

Flavor of Carolina Event:

Last night some of my office staff attended an event that showcased North Carolina products. The event has over 100 vendors from across the state showcasing their products (produce, meat, dairy, sauces and seasoning and much more). It is always great to see that we have so many excellent products being produced in our state. I encourage you to pay attention on your next visit to the grocery store and try to purchase some of the great products of our state. Not only will you have the opportunity to enjoy some great products, you’ll be helping our economy spring forward as well.
